It’s perhaps not so surprising that the Turnbulls became a fierce and sometimes overly independent family once you realise how close their lands lay to the border between Scotland and England. They lived immediately north of one of the main passes between the two countries and had to fend for themselves every time a raiding party or full armed convoy came North.

It was dire necessity that they became a force to be reckoned with and later became renowned as mercenaries throughout Europe. Their zeal for raiding and fighting on both sides of the Border finally led to their persecution and emigration to the four corners of the world. It is estimated there is over 800,000 of us worldwide.
